What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a relatively modern and rapidly evolving grappling-based martial art. The objective is for the fighter to efficiently and effectively utilise skills of control and positioning over a resisting opponent, in ways that will ultimately force him/her to concede via submission.
Control over an opponent is achieved more easily on the ground, therefore the vast majority Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques and strategies are based upon the concept of 'grounding' your opponent and then fighting for dominant positions - from where he/she can be rendered ineffective or (if necessary) unconscious.
A cornerstone of the sport is the Jiu Jitsu fighter's famed ability to control and overcome opponents of greater size, strength and aggression. This is almost always achieved by utilizing superior leverage, momentum, distraction, grips and positioning in relation to your opponent.
Often referred to as the 'Gentle Art', BJJ athletes can often utilise their knowledge and 'sensory feel' to subdue and control an opponent with whatever level of severity the student chooses. Ultimately developing this level of knowledge and physical skill is an extremely demanding, but incredibly rewarding journey.
Students will benefit from greatly increased physical fitness, cognitive problem-solving abilities, self-knowledge of their body and mind, as well as the many social benefits of working within a large group of like-minded individuals - as you learn and have fun together as a team.
Meet The Gracie Family
Widely considered to be the most influential figure in martial arts history, Helio Gracie, is the godfather of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The acronyms MMA, UFC and BJJ would not exist if it were not for the perseverance and real-fight experimentation of Helio and his older brother, Carlos Gracie. Thanks to them, the martial art that was brought to Brazil from Japan by Mitsuyo Maeda Koma, was preserved and later transformed into the sports we now know as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts.
Rickson Gracie was born in November 20, 1958 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rickson is one of the 9 sons of Jiu Jitsu Grandmaster Helio Gracie. Known for his unbeaten 400-0 fighting record and for his exquisite technique, he is a BJJ and an MMA legend and is regarded as the greatest combat sport competitor of all time. Today, his son Kron Gracie, successfully emulates his fathers all action style in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts.
Ryron Gracie is Helio Gracie‘s grandson and the eldest son of Rorion Gracie. Being part of the third generation of martial art’s most illustrious family, Ryron has become a recognizable figure within the BJJ community. A natural teacher he is renowned for to his philosophical style and "Keep it Playful" approach to training and competition. Ryron produces a series of web episodes named “The Gracie Breakdown” where he and his brother Rener Gracie go over techniques (especially Jiu Jitsu submissions) utilized at major UFC events.
